Love Lives On

by Boogienights

Mama bathed them the night before,
carefully curled their golden hair.
The only thing now left to do,
is lay out their best clothes to wear.
Papa had worked so long and hard,
bought tickets to a brand new life.
They packed up everything they owned,
four daughters and his loving wife.

All dressed up in their Sunday best,
a neighbor's carriage they rode in.
Excitement built, they couldn't wait,
a brand new life they would begin.
Possessions loaded, ready now,
they all said their tearful goodbyes.
They sailed off to a new life,
a place where fertile farmland lies.

The ship in all its grandeur stood,
a sight they'd never seen before.
Up through the hatch, then down below
to steerage they soon found their door.
A tight squeeze for the six of them,
four daughters and his wife besides.
Yet still, the thrill of being there
washed over them like ocean tides.

The food more than they'd ever seen,
there even was a room to dance.
As those with instruments would play,
to lively music, they would prance.
On April 15th, 1912,
five days after the ship set sail,
they struck an iceberg in the dark,
they tried to turn to no avail.

The little family down below
had felt the shudder, engines stop.
With four daughters awake in bed,
they heard ma ask what papa thought.
It wouldn't be too long before
the awful truth would come to light.
The ship would sink, there was no doubt,
claimed by the ocean on that night.

So many on the decks below
would never see their dreams come true.
With too few lifeboats, they were doomed,
both rich and poor, captain, and crew.
The father gathered up his girls,
while mama dressed them warm that night.
Women and children only then,
there was a lifeboat in his sight.

"Just room for four more," someone said,
a sailor's voice called in the dark.
He grasped his wife's hand tight in his,
assured their daughters, would embark.
Though almost full, their precious girls,
climbed in the boat as room was made.
"We'll see you soon," they kissed each one,
though hope for them began to fade.

The dreams they had, a little farm,
in fertile soil, crops they'd grow.
A place where their daughters could thrive,
these dreams now gone they came to know.
Much luckier they were than most,
they know some families won't survive.
Their daughters, filled with so much love,
would keep their memory alive.

Into the icy depths, they fell,
clinging on to each other tight.
Too dark to see, the starlit sky,
gave them both comforting light.
Then suddenly from out the dark,
a sailors voice was heard to call,
"Is anybody there!?", he said.
Who pulled them in, they can't recall.

Then reunited once again,
a miracle prayed for that night.
Dreams now renewed, a future planned,
God saw them through their hapless plight.
Four daughters who had grieved their loss,
now cling to mama, papa too.
The joy of seeing them alive
would always stay with them they knew.

Unsinkable is what they said,
"A Ship Of Dreams", that much was true.
But at the bottom, it would end,
a bitter voyage, all would rue.
Titanic will forever stay
a tragedy time won't forget.
Through foolishness of mortal man,
its date with destiny was set.
