Farm Life

by Boogienights

The author has placed a warning on this post for violence.
The storm had raged for hours,
more then once she'd lost her way.
She fought through waist high snow drifts, struggled on.
How far she'd came she couldn't say, it seemed she'd  walked for miles,
the time passed quick, soon daylight
would be gone.

The icy winds of winter, blinded her with stinging force,
her feet froze in her thin, short, worn out boots.
She questioned her very sanity for moving to this place,
in this farm community she'd set down roots.

A teacher here was needed, with certificate in hand,
this seventeen-year-old took on the task.
She'd always loved her siblings, all little kids in fact,
she started before they even had to ask.

Now in this major blizzard, on a tiny worn down farm,
three of her young students were on their own.
She knew the parents had been sick, the furnace must be stoked,
she couldn't leave them scared and all alone.

The temps below the forty mark, not fit for man or beast,
had felled a cow, the animal had froze.
The teacher quickly turned away, disturbed by what she saw,
as frostbite numbed her fingers and her toes.

By force of will she struggled, soon the house came into sight,
as fear for the small children filled her heart.
Expecting to see something else, a farmhouse dark and cold,
what she saw instead gave her a start.

Smoke rose out the chimney and each window blazed with light,
perhaps the parents both recovered well.
She thought that she'd heard laughter, though she wasn't really sure,
the howling wind made it so hard to tell.

She opened up the unlocked door, two small girls, a little boy,
held out their arms and smiled up at her.
Just so glad to see them safe,
She held on to them tight.
without regret for what she had endured.

The oldest spoke, a boy of ten,
he said, "Teacher we're glad you came,
we stoked the furnace up and now it's warm.
Maybe you can read to us, wouldn't that be fun?
We can't go out and play in this bad storm.

Uneasy was the teacher,
there was oddness in this place.
A chill went up her spine and she felt fear.
The little girls, just four and six,
had red stains on their clothes.
She had to find out what had happened here.

"Where are your parents?" the teacher asked.
"In the kitchen" they replied.
The children with her, followed close behind.
She slowly moved toward the room,
it's then she heard them cry.
She didn't have a clue what she would find.

The horror that had met her eyes,
released a primal scream.
The shock of it was just too much to bear.
Surly this could not be real,
just part of a horrible dream.
She couldn't grasp what she was seeing there.

The parents laid upon the table,
both barely hanging on,
there faces held a look of pain and fear.
With parts of them cut clean away,
their arms and legs were gone.
Could the monster who had done this still be here?

"We got real hungry" the children said.
You must be hungry too.
You traveled many miles in this storm.
you can take a bowl and eat,
some of our tasty stew."
We kept it on the stove so it's still warm.

The teacher, overcome with fright, fainted dead away,
woke to find herself tied to a post.
"We hope that you won't mind" the four sweet children said,
but we really want to try teacher on toast."

The farm was far enough away, so no one heard her scream.
Everybody wondered where she'd went.
She got tired of the small town life is what the gossips said.
Another teacher needed, word was sent.

The children left no trace behind
just like they were never born.
Perhaps they'll return at harvest time from out their field of corn.
