Sailors In The Storm

by LisaMay

In stormy ocean swells
staunch sailors chant shanties,
awaiting death’s embrace –
while mermaids murmur,
untangling golden strands
lapped by nets of lace.

Author's Note:
"Shanties" refers to a type of work song (known as a sea shanty, chantey, or chanty) that was once commonly sung to accompany labor on board large merchant sailing vessels (such as hauling the anchor up or hoisting the sails).
The accompanying painting is titled "Ship in Stormy Seas", by Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1817-1900). He was a Russian Romantic painter, considered one of the greatest masters of marine art.
