The Reunion

by LisaMay

Tugging nervously at his face mask, he wanted her to recognise him as she passed by. All he succeeded in doing was snapping the elastic. It twanged into his eye and Gary cried out, clutching his face. This action obscured his visage even more than the now-drooping mask. After a cursory glance in the direction of the weird noise, Belinda turned away and quickly disappeared into the crowd.

Damn these masks… I’ll never get used to them! Belinda looked gorgeous in hers – I’d recognise those eyes anywhere.

Gary had returned to the city recently, determined to make amends for breaking Belinda’s heart when he left. During his absence he’d realized what a mistake he’d made, and seeing her again just now had made him even more keen to rekindle their romance. He knew, however, it would have to be on her terms.

Gary had missed this first chance to meet her; he needed to engineer another opportunity. Where might Belinda be headed next? Would it be their cafe? The supermarket? Then he remembered seeing the library books she was holding. He rushed down the shortcut laneway, dodged through traffic in front of the library, then nonchalantly leaned against a wall by the entrance.

Yes! Here she comes!

Gary had been holding the mutilated mask against his face; now he lowered it and hesitantly stepped forward… waiting...

What will she say?

Belinda stared, unsure...

“It’s you! I nearly didn’t recognise you! Your new moustache will tickle when I kiss you.”
