The Fighter by Jay Squires True Story Flash contest entry |
I harvested my tender age in those days following the flurry of hooks and uppercuts that sprawled Riggs on the canvas. Adulation came overnight. Fame romanced me. My barracks promoted me to squad leader. Once easy friendships now became tinctured with deferential respect. Two lovely civilian girls from off-base courted me. Summit view? Unparalleled! Until the semi-finals. I drew Scotty, from Cleveland. Ringside, my adoring fans saw Scotty educate me with the brutal efficiency of a champion. They watched Scotty pummel, cut, and concuss me throughout round one. The referee delivered me from round two. Descent from the summit? Freefall.
