The animals the former sergeant Pen Farthing has under his care in his shelter called Nowzad in Kabul include:
140 dogs
60 cats
12 donkeys
2 horses
1goat
1cow
Mr Farthing arrived in the town of Now Zad in Helmand Province in November 2006 as part of Kilo Company of 42 Commando Royal Marines, with the mission of providing stability for the locals.
After breaking up an organised dog fight outside their compound, he was befriended by one of the animals.
He named it Nowzad, brought the dog back to start a new life with him in Devon, and founded the charity which bears that name.
Nowzad has now helped and rehomed more than 1,200 animals, many of them with soldiers who formed bonds with them on the front lines during their deployment.
The charity has also trained more than 500 veterinary students in Kabul over the years.
Latest update is that the sum ( £ 200.000 ) to rescue staff and animals from Afghanistan has been raised
further donations will now go to building a new shelter where staff and rescued dogs /animals will find peace.
