Thanksgiving with Family by HarryT
Rhyming Poem writing prompt entry

Our family travels miles to Mom and Dad’s home
Drive from the highway, then down old familiar streets
Brown leaves falling, rolling like blowing sea-foam
Drive passed the snack shop where the gang used to meet

Point out the grammar school attended years ago
Spot the tree out of which I fell and got a broken elbow
Everything seems smaller, but somehow feels the same
I guess some things never do truthfully change

Mom and Dad’s house looming straight ahead
Space in the driveway still crackled asphalt black
Pull behind Dad’s old truck, he painted fire-engine red
House filled except for brother Joe, who never came back

Flash of old times when we kids sat at a rickety card table
Mom got a new one for our kids now, much more stable
Dad says, everyone tell one thing they are thankful for
I have to stop little Alice; she wants to say much more

Our families feel love, that time and distance can’t sway
Next year we’ll be together in our hearts we all pray
My wish simply for us all to make it through another year
Hopefully, without masks and with all those we hold dear
