The youngest memory of my dad, was sitting on his lap
While I sucked my thumb, at times, that's where I took my nap
Then when I woke up, he would comb my light blonde curls
I always felt so safe, because he called me daddy's girl

When I was only six years old and I was very ill
My temperature was high and my body very chilled
In the middle of the night, because we had no telephone
He went to get the doctor and to bring him to our home

I loved to sit with him to watch tv and hear his laughter
I didn't get the humor but I loved what would come after
He laughed until eventually tears would fill his eyes
I thought that it was funny, these Three Stooges made him cry

We didn't have a bathroom but we had an outdoor biff
I learned my fear of spiders there and never take a whiff
At night my dad would put upstairs, a big five gallon pail
One morning as he brought it down, he slipped and then it fell

Dad would take us swimming to a place he called Lake Thunder
He went into the water and soon he would go under
I crawled onto his shoulders and suddenly he'd jump
I flew into the air and hit the water with a thump

It wasn't all that long ago my father passed away
A wonderful 10 gun salute, a beautiful display
People from all over paid respect to my dad, Merle
I was last to leave, to say goodbye from daddy's girl
