Blackbirds don't mind
if the garden is full of weeds,
or if mushrooms have multiplied
in knobby, white clusters
under lounging limbs of lilacs.

Sparrows will still visit,
chirp in tiny, brown spurts of joy
which light up bare branches
of gooseberry bushes.

Starlings will still startle,
blue jays will still scold,
and woodpeckers will most definitely
rattle-peck-peck-peck the silence
until an afternoon nap is blasted into oblivion.

Robins will still sing
if the lawn is overgrown,
tangled and thatched,
with good intentions of mowing.

Ladybugs will love towering dandelions,
as they stand like tiny sailors perched
on velvety-yellow crow's nest,
sailing on afternoon breeze.

Magpies will magnanimously grace
sycamore skies with dark and abrupt elegance.
Pigweed will proliferate,
plums will still plump,
wild yellow snapdragons will snap,
and mums will still mamba,
but the roses and raspberries need watering!

Author Notes
Sometimes we all need motivation to do yard-work. Thanks to Susan F.M.T. for a lovely blackbird photo.
