Conversation with the Gatekeeper by Tom Horonzy Last Call writing prompt entry |
Me, awakening at the pearly gates.
"What happened?"
"You hit a tree doing eighty." "You mean ... I'm dead?" "Aye." "Who are you?" "St. Peter. Gatekeeper." 'Does my missus know?" "Don't think so." "She's a worrier.' 'Give her a call. You get one." "Only one?" "Yep." "Won't be her? She'll cause a scene." "Is It free?"
"Nay." "Have you change?" "Nope." 'Can I call collect?' 'Sure. Why not?' Dial tone precedes two rings. Sultry voice answers. "Nancy's House of Joy." "Cancel our appointment, please?" "There'll be a charge." "That's okay. Use my credit card." I bid adieu and disconnect, smiling.
