Lesson from a child
Keep on trying by Wendy G

She’d had a tiring day at school when I picked her up.

However, rather than go straight home, the six-year-old little girl asked me to take her to the nearby playground.

We had an hour before her mother returned from work, and she wanted to show me her prowess on the monkey bars, her favourite activity.

These were a little higher off the ground than those at her school, so I had to lift her up to reach them. I was impressed with her skills.

But soon her independence came out - she didn’t want any help.

She tried jumping to catch the bars, then a running jump to catch them.

Sometimes she touched them, other times she caught, but could not maintain her hold. I suggested she stop trying, and play on a swing or slide instead.

No – she was determined to succeed. I counted twenty-eight times when she tried to reach those elusive bars.

On the twenty-ninth time, she maintained her grip, and swung proudly along the bars. She was then happy and ready to go home, her little hands red, painful and badly blistered.

With this attitude of determination and perseverance, what obstacles will she overcome with her life? What set-backs will she conquer to achieve all her goals and aspirations?

Author Notes
I even encouraged her to stop, reminding her that she could try again another time when she wasn't already tired from school. But no. Independent and determined ... and she achieved what she set out to do.
