Initiation From boy to man
Narwee and Jannali by Aussie
Rhyming Poetry Contest contest entry

Narwee sat in the stream
Washing himself with leaves of green
Grandma taught him about the soap bush
Native plants are all around growing lush

Peeking around the gum tree, Jannali saw
Narwee, heard Narwee singing native lore
Growing up together, their love bound tight
Knew today was initiation day for his light

Light as a man he could understand life
Be with the elders and take Jannali to wife
Grandpa waited to body-paint the child away
Narwee waited patiently, in tradition it lay

Grandpa used a flint-stone, six cuts showed
Narwee stood like a statue - blood flowed
He came to the Bora Ring as a child; left as a man
Jannali's eyes glistened, she saw the cuts ran

Blood trickled down his chest, she rubbed healing
Healing into his wounds, now she would be feeling
His love for evermore, Narwee and Jannali were wed
Picaninny girl was born to loving couple a year ahead.

Author Notes
Contest Entry for Rhyming Poem
Narwee means Sun and Jannali means place of the moon. Tribal aborigines clean their teeth with charcoal from cold fire. They use leaves from the soap plant to wash daily. The bush is the natural medicine cupboard. Picaninny is a new-born baby.
