In London, a 74-year-old man and his 75-year-old wife and former mistress are crowned King and Queen while the King's two sons watch. The sons don't talk to each other because there is a feud in the family. Millions of people worldwide watch on television. A few billion folks don't care.

A few thousand miles away in Kentucky, 150,000 are gathered to watch and bet on a horse race that lasts slightly more than two minutes. Millions watch the race on television. A horse, hardly anyone ever heard about wins. The horse gets some roses. Five minutes later, only the owner and the jockey cared who won.

A few blocks from my condo in Allen, Texas, a gunman opens fire in a shopping mall. A mall I have visited several times in the last two years. Nine people died several others were injured, ranging from age 5 to 61. Our elected officials have offered thoughts and prayers.

Last week north of Houston, Texas, five people were killed by a gunman. Our Governor, Greg Abbott, said, "They were illegal aliens." Many thought the insensitive remarks meant it is okay to kill illegal aliens. It is not.

It is just this one old man's opinion. But I am tired of hearing our politically elected officials offer thoughts and prayers every few days for another senseless slaughter of people.

I think it's our religious and clergy leaders' responsibility to offer prayers and help us understand these events.

I believe we should expect more from those in power within the government to change the gun violence culture. Is that too much to ask?
