As the train slowly pulled away from Kyiv station, an emotional soldier pressed his hands on the dusty window. “We’ll defeat them,” Lyudmila read on her husband’s lips. She shouted back, sobbing, “I know you will! Please be safe, Aleksander. I love you!” The train disappeared through the cold night. Lyudmila woke up in Warsaw. It was morning. Staring at the window, she saw the loops and whorls of Aleksander’s fingertips still on the glass, lingering like a ghost longing to stay.
