A ray of July sunshine lit up the stone staircase.Barta struggled to stand up from his wooden chair. Living in the basement was increasingly difficult. Glancing  at the 2023 calendar  on the kitchen wall, he peered for a long time at the dates. His birthday fell in July. The exact date escaped him. He wondered would Caterina remember.  The sound of  another shell exploding, echoed in the distance.  Reaching  into the pocket of his  shirt, he took out a  photo of Caterina and his grandson, Mattiu. ‘Bloody war,’ he muttered as he held the photo close,' what's it all for?'   Writing Prompt Write a flash fiction story.
