If you have faith like blah… blah… blah…” Richard sneered as they left church.

Emma scowled at her husband, “You didn’t like the sermon?”

“It’s horseshit, Em! You’ve been on your knees for six years, begging a so-called powerful God for a baby. What did we get, huh?”

“It will come in due time, Rich. I firmly believe I’ll bear your child one day.”

“Yeah, right! On my seventieth birth —”

“Please, Richard! I’m tired of this endless argument. Every time you start this, it’s like you’re pushing a knife through my womb.”

“Sorry, honey. But... I have feelings too, you know. We are two in this sinking ship!”

“How about you start acting like the captain, huh? To be honest, I feel terribly alone in this.”

Richard drove silently home. He hated to cause Emma any pain, but that faith thing? He just didn’t get it.

“If you had to beg your dad year in, year out for a Christmas gift which never came, what would you think of him?"

Emma didn’t respond.

“A monster, Em, no more, no less!”

“How dare you! How about that adoption process we started last year, huh? Aren’t these people monsters for having given us false hopes and left us dry?”

“I know, sweetheart.  Who would have thought that organization was a scam?”

“You had so much faith in them, though!”

“Let’s stop this, Em. Please.”

They made love in tears that night, their usual moaning interrupted by many ‘sorry’, and ‘promise you, it won’t happen again’.

Before they slept, Richard whispered to Emma, “I’ll keep on praying, hon. I’ll be with you all the way, okay?”

“Thank you, Rich. I have a feeling that miracle is happening soon.”

That was thirteen years ago.

“My name is Hannah. I guess I’m that miracle.”
