Carol's first date with Ted had become life-threatening. She was trapped.

Now in a coma-like state, Carol wanted to give up and quietly slip away. Her face had long since frozen into a fixed expression. Ted's voice droned on the periphery of her consciousness, his words fluttering around her head like mushy snowflakes in a white-out. Optimistically, he reached for her. She was cold to his touch.

Then oh, sweet, blessed silence. Carol saw light at the end of the tunnel. Soon she'd be going home!

Gazing thankfully down the drinking straw into the puddle of her vanilla milkshake, Carol roused herself with a final burst of energy, placed her lips over the straw's end, then noisily sucked up the last mouthful.

Ted's face showed his disgust at her unladylike slurping. Having recovered the will to live, Carol quickly left the diner. She had barely escaped being bored to death.
