Things I believe in (and some I don't)

I wonder how old Hades, Zeus, and dear Apollo too
would take it if I said one day "I don't believe in you."
Could Ra and Vishnu strike me down, if gods I did eschew?
How dare I not believe in them, when many millions do?

Why is it that it worries some and causes them to stress
if I should go my own way and believe in one god less?
I've never felt the need for stories made up to oppress,
much less when they're conveyed to me by some bloke in a dress.

It's fourteen billion years since this old universe began;
it runs with great precision, as the finest watches can.
"A watch requires a watchmaker!" announced the clergyman,
but I don't view it all as some divinity's grand plan.

Let's not be fooled that mediums can chatter with the dead.
Astrology and tarot? Try a science book instead!
And auras, bumps and tea leaves from which futures can be read?
Prognostication does exist, but only in one's head.

No point exists in arguments if nuance they should lack;
this world we're in does not consist of purely white and black.
An independent thinker's good, it's best to cut them slack;
to find the truth we sometimes need to leave the beaten track.

That nature is ambivalent is just plain common sense;
a fact that helps us understand the strangest of events.
Her works of wonder radiate a beauty quite intense
while other times her cruelty can seem to us immense.

There's grandeur in the sunrise and a full moon shining bright.
The music of the forest birds makes all the world feel right.
Friends gathered round a campfire on a starlit summer's night
cause any troubles I might face to vanish out of sight.

Our world is full of myths that form an endless folk-tale stream,
the ease with which we're taken in can make me want to scream.
Simplicity of explanation is my constant theme;
old Occam spoke the truth—things are exactly as they seem!

I've heard it said that faith's a wraith, and I believe that's true;
it's sometimes no more than a scam—a racket, through and through.
The ordinary is my love, my psyche's trusted glue,
and I am grateful for this chance to share my faith with you.

Author Notes
It probably looks like I've gone after some sacred cows here. Please accept that it's not my desire to offend anyone. I'm just sharing my perspective on the world, as every other contributor is. You are welcome to your beliefs, whatever they may be.

Some people think those with no religious beliefs don't believe in anything. That suggestion is pretty much the oddest thing I can imagine. I've tried to distill a little of what I think makes the world go around into these few verses.

If you made it to the end, congratulations, and thanks for reading.
