the field  mushroom shoulders itself through the earth, breathes spores, retires.   Recognized Author Notes I became fascinated by Spencer's line: The Sea-shouldering Whale. This poem was born from reflection on that line. Written in 15 syllables I try to sum up the cyclical life of fungi.
