Playing among the vegetables and flowering fruits
Climbing trees at night while playing hide and seek
Raking leaves into piles before hopping right on in
Picking up those twigs and leaves as our chore
Pushing around the windchime as it spun us a melody
Hopping a fence to play on the school swing set
Building a rock fort that would be destroyed next recess
Heading inside to shred papers, with permission of course
Watching movies, the makeshift pillow fort sturdy around us
Laughing though we’ve seen them all many times
Hearing a call to eat, fresh buns and iced tea waiting
Scarfing down the food like we haven’t eaten in days
Becoming sleepy, our energy finally waning
Cuddling up to Grammy as she read us a story
Getting tucked in to bed, good night kisses all around
My sister and I spent more time at my grandma’s, I think,
So, while it wasn’t our family’s home,
It was ours.
A home -
Something that, when we leave it behind,
our whole body yearns to return
even when it no longer exists.
