Silvered orb adrift in space
reflecting light from distant sun.
Such beauty in your silent grace
strange tales about you have been spun.

Your core is made of ripe green cheese
you host a man with smiling face.
Responsible for lunacies
and varying the tidal race.

From Earth we see one side of you
your secret darkness lurks behind.
Impact craters in full view
which streaks of magma have defined.

The tranquil sea where Eagle splashed
a layer of lunar dust concealed.
A golf ball, too, which Shephard smashed,
your lesser gravity revealed.

In myth with Goddesses you walk,
Selene rules the waves on Earth.
Luna, queen of arid rock,
mocks mankind with gleeful mirth.

In Wiltshire smugglers wielding rakes
pretended they were chasing you.
Reflected image deep in lakes
avoiding tax on revenue.

You wax and wane each thirty days;
when quartered you display your horns.
Delighting with each changing phase,
illuminating winter morns.

September brings your Harvest form
which Hunters' moon then supersedes.
The gathering of wheat and corn
the chase of Artemis precedes.

Worshipped, too, by ancient tribes,
celestial sphere with mystic powers;
lauded by their learned scribes,
light bringer to their darkest hours.

But greatest praise spills from my lips
when you extinguish mighty Sol.
The thrill of each solar eclipse
excites, astounds us, one and all.
