Author Notes
Today is World Communion Sunday. Churches across the world observe Holy Communion, which is a Christian worship service to commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This sacred service involves sharing bread and wine in remembrance of Jesus' words that the bread is His body, and the wine is His blood, which He sacrificed on the Cross for the sins of the world.
As the pastor was reciting the Scriptures concerning the taking of the Sacraments, I looked down into the small plastic cup of wine (juice) I was holding. I noticed a reflection of one of the sanctuary's overhead lights in the cup. With each of my heartbeats, the light flickered on the surface of the wine, giving it a shimmering effect.
I then heard the pastor repeat Jesus' words: "This is my blood, shed for you. Drink it in remembrance of Me." It suddenly occurred to me that my heart was beating in rhythm in the blood of Christ.
I'm not sure many would have even noticed this tiny occurrence of the heart beating in the wine or attached any significance to it. But for me, it had a profound effect I will always remember.
