Author Notes
A calf born prematurely whose mother died in childbirth or soon thereafter. Its immature digestive system was unable effectively to process the coarse prairie grass leading to excess gas in the stomach compartments and bowels, producing a distended abdomen. Even tough cowboys were often moved when they came across one of these unfortunate orphans.
