Freedom is Precious by skye
Quatrain Poetry Contest contest entry

I'm coming home soon,
coming home to stay,
to play with my children.
Never again will I stray.

No more dodging bullets,
no more fighting wars,
just home to my family.
Won't leave anymore.

Because of the terrorists,
I got stripes and a gun.
Now I'm a soldier
and trained not to run.

I led men into battle
over hot desert sand.
We fought, and some perished,
left their blood in that land.

I led them in life,
watched some take their last breath;
sent letters to families
describing their deaths.

I solemnly escorted
cold coffins in flags,
brought them home to America,
surrendered their tags.

I honor my country
I so proudly have served.
Never once have I faltered.
Never once have I swerved.

I'm going home now
leaving the battles behind.
Leaving those horrors
that still haunt my mind.

I am proud to have worn
my uniform and gear.
Like so many before me,
we fought through great fear.

My service was given
so all can stay free.
Remember that thousands
still serve gallantly.

I salute our flag proudly,
kept safe by our guns.
I honor our soldiers,
America's daughters and sons.
