Upwards
he slowly works
tattooing with his beak
the wizened bark of spindly elm
until he's briefly gorged and flies away.
The tap-tap echo like a tolling bell
does not recede but lingers on
and then on yonder tree
begins anew
to play.

This type of poem is called a DECIQUAIN. This ten-line poem has lines measured in iambic feet in this sequential syllabic order as follows: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 then 10, 8, 6, 4, 2. Lines 5 and 10 must rhyme.
