On the eve of a new year
I take a good look
at my reflection in the mirror
What I see are lines, not of old age,
but lines that span generations
I see my grandfather
who crossed the Pacific Ocean
in search of a new home
They say I have his eyes -
and determination
I see my mother who left her home
as a young bride with my dad
They say I have her smile -
and positive outlook
I see my son who has raised
a fine family - two lovely grandsons
who give me much joy
My son has my sense of humor -
and my strong chin
I also see my beautiful daughter
who has the kindest heart in the world
Her heart is her own,
but she has my patience
What I see are bits and pieces
of a mosaic all interconnected
to form a picture of a good life -
for which I thank God
on this eve of a new year
