One day I went ice fishing,
had my ice shack all in place.
Got bait and pole together,
wrapped three scarves around my face.
Sat down to wait, a trophy fish,
is what I dreamed about.
The ice hole drilled was extra large,
so I could drag it out.
The minutes seemed like hours,
as my toes began to freeze.
The cold crept up my frozen legs,
and stiffened both my knees.
My tiny stove, it sputtered,
the hard wind blew my way.
But I would never stop my quest,
on that thirty below day.
My fingertips were turning white,
beneath my woolen glove.
But ice fishing was in my veins,
the thing that I most love.
My eyelashes froze to my cheeks,
and soon I couldn't see.
But the giant, elusive Muskellunge,
would soon be my trophy.
Suddenly, my pole was shaking,
I jumped up at the sight.
Half filled up with excitement,
and half filled up with fright.
I took a firm, determined grip,
my hands blistered and sore.
This monster wouldn't give me the slip,
not like the times before.
Down on my knees, arms through the hole,
we wrestled through the day.
Till finally with my last burst of strength,
the giant fish gave way.
Now when it laid upon the ice,
all forty-eight inches long.
I looked into it's wise old eyes,
and knew where it belonged.
We took a selfie first, of course,
before he slipped back through.
Because no one in their right mind,
would believe this story true.
Besides frostbite and one toe lost,
and nothing mounted on my wall.
I still think it was worth the cost,
to have a story that beats all.
A few days later I went to see,
my neighbor across the bay.
To tell my story, show my pic,
proof of that glorious day.
He let me in, it was a sin,
imagine my surprise!
To find my Muskie on his wall,
in all it's epic size.
"I caught that easy" is what he said,
"There was no need for bait".
"It's like he jumped right out the hole"
"I tell you, it was great"
I show my pic from time to time,
the Muskie I set free.
Just wish my neighbor hadn't caught him
shortly after me!
