Sad Poems writing prompt entry

In the beginning I watched with youthful eyes
The forming of my future's plight.
I learned from the old and trained the new,
Always eager to take up the fight.

I watched all the changes, the good and bad,
That took place from day to day.
I fought my fight and stood my ground
And in some things, I had my say.

Now the feelings I felt for the way it was
Has changed into pain and fear.
The strain takes it's toll and the desire to win
Lessens with each passing year.

Are the problems I picture in my head
Really that bleak and dreary?
Or, am I just an old man, worn from the fight,
and Just plain battle weary?

If as I fear the latter is true
And I am reaching the end of my day.
Let it be said, with love in heart,
That I have passed this way.

Writing Prompt
Sadness has overcome us all at one time or another. Either caused by a relative or close friend's death or from the girl or guy that broke our heart or just life in general. We all handle situations differently, some good, some bad. This contest gives us the ability to explore this. Your poem can also play into other emotions that are common to writing like this such as anger or depression.

Author Notes
This was to describe my sadness for the way things are today and what many of us tried to do to keep it from happening.
