What He Hears by Boogienights
Mental Health contest entry

Each day somewhere lips meet lips,
arms encircle one another.
Then fate steps in and helps along,
two hearts to find each other.

Yet, this won't happen for my son,
he's facing a lonely life ahead,
with all of his days and nights spent,
with the voices in his head.

Of course, he has his family,
and we love him, keep him near.
Yet, sometimes when we talk to him,
we know that he can't hear.

The voices, loud and boisterous,
are what he listens to,
schizophrenia rules his world.
There's nothing we can do.

Some days are worse than others,
in his room, he hides away.
Getting counsel and advice from them,
the voices, they hold sway.

Some days he just enjoys life,
watching football with his dad.
Birthday parties, music, movies,
but still I feel so sad...

About the things he's missing
in his unfulfilling life,
friends, a job, a lover
who might someday be his wife.

For those with mental illness,
it's a battle every day.
The meds help keep things in control,
so he can make his way.

He's not alone, will never be,
his family has his back.
Throughout his good and bad days,
we'll all help keep him on track.

Still, sometimes I get angry
and curse at God above,
while at the same time thanking him,
for this young man that I love.
