With a wink
he stole my young heart
I smiled back
as he waved
Across the dance floor he came
We shared our first dance
In the spring
he proposed marriage
with a ring
and a wink.
Our wedding was beautiful
We were in heaven
Before long
our family grew
First, a boy
then a girl
We couldn't be happier
in our little house
Years flew by
Kids grew up and left
Just us two
once again
dancing in the living room
to our favorite song
Then one day
coming home from work
he felt lost
Did not know
or remember where he lived
It was Alzheimer's
The disease
took away his mind -
not his heart
One last time
he opened his eyes and winked
with his old sweet smile

Author Notes
The Shadorma is a poetic form consisting of a six-line stanza (or sestet). The form is alleged to have originated in Spain. Each stanza has a syllable count of three syllables in the first line, five syllables in the second line, three syllables in the third and fourth lines, seven syllables in the fifth line, and five syllables in the sixth line (3/5/3/3/7/5) for a total of 26 syllables. A poem may consist of one stanza, or an unlimited number of stanzas (a series of shadormas).
