Thank you for teaching a little of labor history. There was a time when unions were the toast of the town but like anything that has success, pride enters in. The leaders thereafter became obsessed with $$ $ $ $ for their house and like a home made from cards it fell.

Tom, yes I grew up way beyond the implementation of the labor movement. I worked in manufacturing and as a manager we dealt with the union reps at numerous plants - Some good, most pretty self-serving and unwise about the cost of their demands.

Good entry for the May Day writing prompt contest. Nice presentation.

Interesting approach. Some of the words were old English to fit the time, good

Goodluck in the contest.

This is well written and well presented. The image works perfectly to set the tone immediately. I appreciate the historical notes, as I was unfamiliar with this information.
Your writing is descriptive and the rhymes work well. Thank you for sharing.

This work has reached the exceptional level

I greatly enjoy both your knowledge of history and your ability to develop
wonderful poetry. You have been blessed with many talents. I was educated
in poor quality parochial schools. I have had to self educate especially in
history, which I love with passion.

You did a great job with this prompt. You successfully detailed The Haymarket
Affair of 1886 in poetry, a difficult task. May Day's significance is now deeply
embedded in my brain..

Julcia, you presented a beautiful presentation of your thirst for knowledge! Learning is a life long process and I think you will do remarkably well in your quest in seeking new found discoveries and I am humbles that I was able to contribute a bit to this quest.

It's true that in the past the poor working was paid a fair day's pay for a day of hard work, that associates with workers throughout the western world, while in the east it remains that way. This beautifully written Jim, well done, blessings Roy

This is an interesting story you've shared in this poem JLR. I'd never heard of it before, nor it's association with May Day. I guess some things never change. Good luck in the contest.

A fine tribute to this tragedy which I have heard about before. The fight was for an 8-hour working day as the workers worked 60 hours per week on a 6-day week. This all ended in those who were responsible being hanged and they became martyrs. The event is very significant in American history and I am glad you wrote about it, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

I loved this poem. It is a well written tribute to the riot. It is always good to reflect on past conflicts to see and respect the rights people fought for. Great job!

This poem, The Haymarket Riot, gives a poetic spin to this important event which brought workers' rights to the forefront and enabled, eventually, union organizers to bring solidarity to workers and business owners.
