This is a lovely tribute poem JLR, to all who have and are still serving. I love your closing couplet
remorse forgot
the brave are not
so true and should always be so.
Well done.

Combat was much more personal then. The danger more imminent, but somehow less threatening. As opposed to being bombarded by attack from both land and air Simultaneously. Therefore the opportunity for brave act being widely noted was greater.

Nomi, yes I was in reflection of WW1, as I wrote this poem. The last time that horses were on the field of battle and combat was literally hand-to-hand in many instances.

Technology has made killing more devastating, widespread, and impersonal. Today many never even see their victims, so mass killing never touches them the way having to look into the eyes of the man you just killed does not bother you as much.

Your last line sums it up nicely. "the brave are not." Would that we all remember the brave who have stood in our stead and defended against whatever enemy is there. The words in your poem sometimes summon dire scenes and horrific events, but that is conflict, and the brave certainly deserve not to be forgotten.

Good job, thanks

A beautiful tribute to our men and women that are serving and have served, so we remain free. What a sacrifice for them as well as their families. I've read many tributes, but yours hit the mark entirely.

This poem is excellent in every respect--skillfully written, moving, patriotic, and vividly descriptive of the workings of war, the bloodshed, and the heroism.

Young and old, short and tall, they are carrying out orders to shoot whatever moves. To stand bold. Once the war is over, they return home as a hero. However, the hero behind closed doors reveals the truth. Thank you.

I think the rhythm and fast pace of this poem reflects the fast pace of people in battle. It is very well written.

Our soldiers are brave but I can't say the same about the politicians who send them into battle. Regards, Lilly

You've generated a great rhythm with this piece, pulsing forth and back, not until the tides of battle. I like the contradt of pride against the horrors of reality, but the end result of admiration being the same.

Beautifully done.

This is well written and emotional. I can feel your passion come pouring through your words.
The image you chose is moody and sets the tone immediately.
The rhymes flow naturally without force and led me down the page.
This is an important piece that I hope will members will read.

The remembrance of the valor and the sacrifice of war carries through in this moving poem. When tackling a subject such as this it is often restricting to have to worry about meter and rhyme. That is, for some poets. (Me! For me!)

You've done this masterfully. From the first line to the closing couplet each time I read this through my focus was on your meaning ~ only after did I go back and follow your meter and rhyme!
