Chapter 1
Warmth

By playinaround

I drifted, drifted – far away

This tender eve the boat did sway

So gently

’Twas but a dream yet on this night

no silent screams or torrid fright

Just waves of such pure delight

Safe from anything that might

Harm me

Over me a homemade quilt

so warm and soft and safe it felt

holding me

Was walking home from work next eve

holding tight to the dream

reliving, reveling – coveting, experiencing

everything

Passed a woman on the ground

faced to the wall - sleeping sound

Upon her ragged figure found -

the dirty, torn and weathered quilt

Warm and safe, she must have felt

Dream on

Chapter 2
ANSWER: Anger

By playinaround

You are a pig?

ME?  Why am I a pig?

You are a human garbage disposal
eating other peoples crap.
Does it go down easy
swallowing their scraps?!
You are weakling and a doormat
Must be degrading to be like that

You are kidding me
I didn’t know you knew!
Who else did you tell this to?

Only you

But, how can I change?

When you are ready
This is what I do
With my help
You can do it too

Who are you?

Sort of a riddle
and a recipe
with a bit of awareness
and a whole lot of me
The pig and the doormat
will quickly cease to be

I think I'm ready now...

Chapter 3
One Uneventful Night

By playinaround

I have always lived on the edge
Just one step away from the ledge

A death wish you might say
Taking for granted each day

My family prepared for the wake
And the poignant speech they would make

Approaching  my sixty third year
I guess I was meant to be here

I don't like to guess my demise
But just for this exercise

In my room the grim reaper will creep
And whisk me away as I sleep

Chapter 4
Colourful Stroll

Chapter 6
Sometimes its the journey

By playinaround

Standing on a dirt road by the bus stop in New Mexico, with the sun going down...

All around me. an indescribable sunset

I patiently wait

as warm wind surrounds my face
It playfully swirls my dark hair which annoyingly whips at my nose, ears and lips.

Imagine...

Headed to California... Palm trees, sandy beaches, and teeny tiny bugs...

I think, as the sunset engulfs me

Hope the bus breaks down...

Chapter 7
You Asked!

By playinaround

If I had to do it all again, I'd strangle myself with the umbilical cord

Chapter 8
Dream Light

By playinaround

Hardened solid is the clay
that shapes the way I am today
I dream escape from endless grief
restoring child-like belief

Experience has made me cold
Stolen who i was before
Left behind half of a whole
Changed the essence of my core

I wish to dance in brilliant light
Cleanse my soul with gentle rain
Slumber sound in dark of night
At dawn awaken without pain

Soar up high in skies above
Gaze down upon meadows green
Once again believe in love
and have faith in things unseen

Memories that formed the clay
Although impossible to do
Will them all to melt away
and live the bliss that I once knew

Author Notes There was a contest for submitting one of your first poems. I missed it...

Chapter 11
Royal Chambers And Wine

By playinaround

He awoke to find the golden key
 It eluded him so jealously
The chamber and its soft delight
now his and her's alone tonight

 The canopy’s shear draped satin
compelled him to sing low in latin
A language that he never knew
Delight betwixt his weak knees grew

He caught a glimmer in the bed
'twas not the one whom he’d just wed
The door he opened was all wrong
Too much wine and too much song

led him to the Royal Queen
 this revelation turned him green
He quickly snuffed the candles' fire
laid back down where he was prior

Said a prayer – went fast asleep
 A secret he’d forever keep
In this tale lives a simple lesson
Some things just aint' worth confessin’

Chapter 12
Pandemic Progress

By playinaround

at first
I smeared lambs blood
On my door....

Now I've gone back
to picking
my nose

Chapter 15
Night Owls

By playinaround

Dark and safe, the sinking night
Emotions stir before dawns light -
proceeds to hide the awakening heart
Be it whole or only part
Alive! Awake and questioning
the truth concerning everything

Before the moon sets down below,
the restless soul longs to know
pure meaning of this pulse inside,
that which no one can confide

The soul retreats with mornings glow
never to find what it wants to know

Chapter 16
Lucid Dream

By playinaround

Dawn always comes too soon
in the darkened room

In her dream-like state
a creature arrives

A cerulean butterfly
to chase away her pain,
and silent suffering

She covets its magnificent wings
as it hovers and glides
illuminating the darkness
of her soul

She follows its every move
as it slowly fades
and returns
to the hope chest
in her mind

Wearily she whispers
as if to someone else

"It's okay Valerie
take your pills
It'll be okay"

Start the coffee
Comes the day

Chapter 17
5-7-5 and the wild winds blew

By playinaround

...and the wild winds blew
must have been a perfect storm

that created you...

Chapter 18
Beyond Fear

By playinaround

thought - rolls by like tickertape

emotion - a rowboat in the night ocean

tossing two and fro in the darkness
rocking ebb and flow in the piercing chill

threatening rogue waves
created by giant ships passing
waver one's existance

talk of shore, a warm sandy beach
beckons clarity in a weary heart
in the tiny wooden boat

Rowing is the hardest part

Just

Row

          Row

                      Row...

Chapter 19
Baby and the Firefly

By playinaround

One humid, dark Virginia night
Mama holding baby tight
Strolling with no light in sight
With daddy walking on her right
Suddenly to her delight
She see's a floating, flitting light
"Hello there little human sprite"
"Bugs can't talk," she says outright
"And nor can babies of your height"
says the fly who lights the night
"We can if we try with all our might"
we've talked a lot so far despite

must be special, you and I"
Baby smiles and waves good bye....

Author Notes Thank you avmurray, for the beautiful artwork!

Chapter 20
Good NIght

By playinaround

I revel in the dark of night
Don’t need sunlight
The stars too shine
The night is mine

A soft and deep sweet lullaby
Dear blackened sky
My secrets keep
While I’m asleep

Like a shadow lurking behind
The night is blind
It cannot see
to label me

Chapter 21
Looking Back

By playinaround

No matter how strongly intact
our cards are already stacked
Comes a time in our lives
when innocence dies
simply an unfortunate fact

Back when life was worth living
Love was abundant for giving
Not a care in the way
but what next to play
days our hearts cannot stop reliving

I drove slowly by the old cemetery today

Green, green grass
Immaculately groomed

A garden of white headstones
Perfectly spaced
as far as the eye could see

Each white stone had a story
Surrounded by a world of grief

I drove by the old cemetery today and I am not alone

Chapter 32
A Fist Full of Sand

By playinaround

A fist full of sand
that sifts through the hand
back to the land
Can't hold on

Feather in the breeze
Think you'd catch it with ease
but its only a tease
It blows away

A twinkling star
seen from afar
but then here we are
Never to touch

Sand at the beach
Feather out of reach
A star thats too far
What LOVE is to me
