"Thirty (hopefully) Poems for April"

Chapter 1
Quite Out of the Blue

By Debra White

From darkest depths of indigo,
familiar clusters twinkled ‘hi’,
when rather unexpectedly
an elephant went floating by.

Transported by an air balloon,
it veered towards the crescent moon.
I swear I hadn’t had a drink -
I must be going mad, I think!

Author Notes I'm late starting NaPoWriMo this year, but I hope to catch up and write 30 poems in April.

I have used the prompt for day one, from napowrimo.net - Write a poem based on a book cover.

The artwork is courtesy of Public Domain Review (From the book 'On a Lark to the Planets' - Frances Trego Montgomery. 1904)

Chapter 2
Cowbird

By Debra White

It’s true, I’d never heard of you before.
A name like yours prevented me accepting
that you were not dreamt up by fantasists.
You're not the creature I had been expecting.

A feathered, bovine beast would be absurd...
It’s fact that you're a bonafide bird!

Author Notes I'm late starting NaPoWriMo this year, but I hope to catch up and write 30 poems in April.

My intention was to use the prompt for day two from napowrimo.net. BUT, within the prompt, I came across the word 'cowbird', something I hadn't heard of before. I decided to abandon the prompt and to write about a cowbird instead!

bovine - relating to or affecting cattle
bonafide - genuine; real

The artwork is straight from the imagination of my talented daughter, Katie, and the photograph is courtesy of bird.org.

Cowbirds are birds belonging to the genus Molothrus in the family Icteridae. They are of New World origin, and are obligate brood parasites, laying their eggs in the nests of other species. (Wikipedia)

Chapter 3
Cloudless

By Debra White

What is spiky?
What is black?
What can’t you see
when skies are dark?
What can sink?
What brings drought?
What may be deeper
than a whale or submarine?
Whisper it to yourself...

Author Notes I'm late starting NaPoWriMo this year, but I hope to catch up and write 30 poems in April.

Today I am using (loosely!) the prompt for day 3 from napowrimo.net

Write an opposite poem - Find a shortish poem that you like, and rewrite each line, replacing each word (or as many words as you can) with words that mean the opposite.

I waved my opposite wand over a poem for children that I found on Pinterest. The original poem is featured in the artwork and both are courtesy of Pinterest.

If anyone has a solution to the riddle that my opposite poem has turned into, please share it with me and I will include your ideas within the author notes.

Thank you :)

Chapter 4
A Gentle Spin

By Debra White

I dusted off my mountain bike
and took it for a gentle spin.
You should have seen the mud. - Oh yikes!
I’d dusted off my mountain bike.
That squelchy type I so dislike
entrapped my wheels. I toppled in.
I dusted off my mountain bike -
I’d hoped to have a gentle spin.

Author Notes I'm late starting NaPoWriMo this year, but I hope to catch up and write 30 poems in April.

Today I am using the prompt for day 4 from napowrimo.net

Write a triolet - A triolet is an eight-line poem. All the lines are in iambic tetramenter (for a total of eight syllables per line), and the first, fourth, and seventh lines are identical, as are the second and final lines. This means that the poem begins and ends with the same couplet. Beyond this, there is a tight rhyme scheme (helped along by the repetition of lines) ABaAabAB.

My triolet is based on what actually happened yesterday, the only difference being that I was with my husband and not on my own. Needless to say, he thought it most amusing when I fell into the mud!

Chapter 5
On the Sour Side

By Debra White

she was always
a bit
   on the sour side

Aunty Vera

bitching and moaning
about relatives
who had wronged her
or just
plain irritated
the life out of her

it made her happy
   the bitching
it made me happy
   the knowing it wasn’t me
doing the irritating

at her funeral
I listened

to the praise she received
from those she had bitched about

to the tone-deaf distant uncle
in the pew behind
raising his voice in
loud
   joyful
      discord

to Aunty Vera
   whispering inside my head
something about
a strangled cat
   being more tuneful.

it wasn’t until Uncle Tuneless
passed a tissue
over my shoulder
that I felt tears on my cheek

it wasn’t funny
   not one bit

but my God, it felt good to laugh

Author Notes I'm late starting NaPoWriMo this year, but I hope to catch up and write 30 poems in April.

Today I am using the prompt for day 5 from napowrimo.net

Write a poem in which laughter comes at what might otherwise seem an inappropriate moment ???¢?? or one that the poem invites the reader to think of as inappropriate.

Chapter 6
No More No Less

By Debra White

My morning coffee must be made
from sixty beans, precisely.
No other number satisfies
or hits the spot as nicely.

I may have lost my hearing but
I haven't lost my taste!
Don't serve me up that instant muck,
it's only fit for waste.

Exactly sixty coffee beans,
that is the only figure
to brew the perfect beverage
to give me vim and vigour.

Author Notes I'm late starting NaPoWriMo this year, but I hope to catch up and write 30 poems in April.... getting there!

Today I am not using the prompt for day 5 from napowrimo.net, as I didn't like it! Instead, I've used the Amazing Fact Generator from mental floss.com to inspire me.

The fact I used as a basis for my poem is this - Beethoven went out of his way to ensure that his morning coffee was made from exactly 60 coffee beans. The accompanying artwork is from the same source.

Chapter 7
Hair? Where? Don't Care!

By Debra White

There was a young lady named Stella
who didn't expose her glabella.
She knew it was there
beneath all the hair
but she couldn't care a crapella.

--O--

In this world of judgement
where there's pressure to fit in,
be like our lovely Stella
and embrace the skin you're in!

Author Notes I'm late starting NaPoWriMo this year, but I hope to catch up and write 30 poems in April.... getting there!

Today, I've used the Amazing Fact Generator from mental floss.com to inspire me.

The fact I used as a basis for my poem is this 'The space between your eyebrows is called the glabella.'

a crapella - 1. (n) a painful or otherwise uncomfortable bowel movement resulting in audible vocalization of lament or relief. 2. (v) to audibly vocalise lament or relief while performing a bowel movement. (Urban Dictionary)

Chapter 8
Not The Way You Look At Me

By Debra White

What I adore is not the way
you look at me with hopeful eyes -
It makes me want to break away
from obligation, compromise.

I feel the me I used to be
got lost in domesticity
and just the outer shell remains.
It’s so long since I felt like me.

What I’d adore is nothing more
than unencumbered days ahead
with no decisions to be made
and sleeping solo in my bed.

Author Notes I'm was late starting NaPoWriMo this year, but I hope to catch up and write 30 poems in April.... almost on track!

Today, I started using a prompt from Poets and Writers to inspire me, but what I ended up with is totally unrelated!

Chapter 9
I'd Rather Be An Underling

By Debra White

You think yourself oracular,
the knower of all things.
So mentally superior
to us, mere underlings.

Not one of our opinions
is worth consideration
because we plebs know nothing
next to your sophistication.

The intellectual worldliness
within you radiates.
But on your self-made pedestal
you don't have many mates.

Author Notes I hope to write 30 poems in April for NaPoWriMo, but I'm late starting. I'm slowly catching up...

For this poem, I chose the 'word of the day' from merriam-webster.com - Oracular: can be used to describe a person who resembles an oracle (a person giving wise or authoritative decisions or opinions.)

Chapter 10
Works Of Art

By Debra White

painter’s soiled apron
hints of creative chaos -
abstract masterpiece

Author Notes I hope to write 30 poems in April for NaPoWriMo, but I'm late starting. I'm slowly catching up...

Chapter 11
Come The Harvest

By Debra White

In a world
where apples rule

I wonder what would be
my destiny
come the harvest

picked
plastic packed
with five similar others

left
on the tree
with the rest
                       the rejects

to be nibbled
and pecked
until
the inevitable

fall and ferment

I wonder
which rotten ending
would be
mine

Author Notes I'm slowly but surely catching up with NaPoWriMo!
This is my eleventh poem of the month, so I'm only two behind schedule :)

Inspired by the artwork which I saw displayed in a shop window this afternoon.

Chapter 12
Bold as Brass

By Debra White

ballsy ginger tom
struts his stuff through neighbour’s yard -
guard dog seethes indoors

Author Notes My haiku is inspired by the massive ginger cat that swaggers through our back garden at least half a dozen times a day. If our spaniel, Molly, happens to see it through the window, she goes crazy!

Chapter 13
Tempestuous Teen

By Debra White

reverberations
as mom gets it wrong again
- bedroom door slams shut

Author Notes
tempestuous - characterized by strong and turbulent or conflicting emotion.

reverberations - prolongation of a sound; resonance / a continuing effect; a repercussion.

Chapter 14
How I Did Yell

By Debra White

I fell flat on my arse this aft -
I felt so daft
and my girls laughed,
but OH!
It hurt
like hell.
How I did yell
and curse, as well -
I'm such a graceless so-and-so.

Author Notes It's mostly all true... I slipped in the mud and fell hard onto my backside. The girls didn't actually laugh at me, but I did yell, cry and curse a little. I think I have a bruised coccyx and my wrist is also quite sore.

daft - foolish

Image: my actual jeans, muddied by my fall from grace!

My intention was to write a Novenary Reel, but I messed up and forgot a very important part of the form (see below between the asterisks) and line 3 sticks out a bit, so this is my Modified Novenary Reel - Please forgive me, Dolly's Poems ;) xx

The Novenary Reel - invented by Dollys Poems in 2020. A short poem made up of nine lines. The trick is to keep the shape of the bobbin reel using appropriate words.

* The first four lines describe the problem or subject and the last five lines, the solution or conclusion.*

Written in iambic meter, 8,4,4,2,2,2,4,4,8. The rhyme scheme is below:

x x x x x x x a
x x x a
x x x a
x b
x c
x d
x x x d
x x x d
x x x x x x x b

Chapter 15
How Quickly?

By Debra White

How quickly Monday comes around,
at least, that’s what I’ve always found.
The working week just dawdles by
whilst weekends race and rush and fly.

Efficiently and without sound,
how quickly Monday comes around,
all business-like and good-to-go,
not caring that I’m crying, ‘No!’

But time won’t pause for any man,
it’s tick-tocked since the world began.
How quickly Monday comes around.
The weekend’s not got off the ground.

Now Sunday bed-time looms once more
like all the others gone before -
It never ceases to astound
how quickly Monday comes around.

Author Notes I am feeling every word of this, tonight!

Chapter 16
The Answer Is Always Tea

By Debra White

queue limps forward
as upper lip remains stiff -
teapot on standby

Author Notes Three of many intrinsic parts of being British - we are sticklers for queueing, we keep a stiff upper lip and we love a nice cup of tea!

Stiff upper lip: staying resolute without giving way to emotion.

Chapter 17
Pie

By Debra White

it wasn’t ready
the pie

everyone knew it

nonetheless
they scoffed the lot

and then
                       grumbled
                                                found fault

if only

they had just
                                 waited
been a bit
                          patient

that pie
would have
satisfied them all

Author Notes Nonetheless : in spite of

Chapter 18
Smart Alec

By Debra White

he knew ev'rything
until it all went pear-shaped -
delib'rate mistakes

Author Notes You know one too, right?! They're never wrong and even if they are, it's on purpose!

Smart Alec: an irritating person who behaves as if they know everything

Pear-shaped: to go wrong, to fail miserably, to go awry in a terrible fashion

Chapter 19
Alas, Alack!

By Debra White

rather rapidly
regret replaces relief -
empty cardboard tube

Author Notes The dismay you feel when you realise, too late, that the toilet paper has not been replenished.

Chapter 20
Lagging, Flagging, Can't Keep Up

By Debra White

NaPoWriMo's
almost done
and I'm rhyming
on the run.

This post puts me
two thirds through.
Playing catch-up -
much to do.

Ten to write,
that's two each day.
Full time work gets
in my way.

Five days only
left to go.
Will I make it?
Don't think so...

Author Notes Realisation that even if I manage to post twice each day, I'm going to be one poem short at the end of the month.

Chapter 21
Restless

By Debra White

tomorrow's trials
jostle for acknowledgement -
rapid eye movement

Author Notes Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is one of four stages the brain moves through while sleeping. REM sleep typically starts within 90 minutes of falling asleep. During rapid eye movement sleep, a person's brain activity, breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure increase, and the eyes move rapidly while closed.

At the moment, I'm finding that I'm unable to switch off from everything I have going on. My thoughts seem to race most of the night, preventing me from sleeping soundly, even though my husband says that I must have had a 'good night's sleep' because I snored all night!

Each morning, I wake up feeling drained, unrefreshed and ill-prepared for the day ahead.

Chapter 22
Sun and Moon

By Debra White

Daughters
I’m blessed with two -
Katie and Rebecca.
As opposite as sun and moon,
yet, both shine so beautifully to me.
Each brings balance to the other
in their own unique way.
Givers of joy -
Daughters

Author Notes Photo - Katie and Rebecca

Chapter 23
Gone Missing

By Debra White

This morning, I started a head-count
of chapters so far in my book.
I don’t know what prompted me to it,
though glad I decided to look -

‘cos chapter fourteen has gone missing!
I haven’t a clue where it went.
I can’t even think what it looked like.
My mem’ry is shattered and spent.

I feel like an overwhelmed mother
who’s taken her eye off the ball
and one of her mischievous children
is hiding, won’t come to her call.

I’m having to write a replacement.
This verse you’re now reading is ‘it’
and whilst it is evenly metered,
the rhyming and content are poor!

Author Notes How frustrating it was to realise that I am even further behind than I thought! I do not even know how I managed to miss out a chapter when the numbers are auto-generated... grrr!

Chapter 24
Just Seven More

By Debra White

My time is up -
It's May the first,
I failed the task,
the bubble burst.

But I won't moan
or stamp or sob,
I'll just write on,
complete the job.

Just seven more
then I'll be through
and I will yell
Yippee! Yahoo!

Author Notes So, as predicted (by me) I didn't manage to complete 30 poems during April... but I will continue with my book until I have 30 poems in it!
Thank you to everyone who has been rooting for me and giving me words of encouragement. I appreciate you...

The gorgeous artwork is courtesy of my lovely friend and fellow Fanstorian, Maria (Heather Knight) - Thank you, Maria x

Chapter 25
Morning

By Debra White

from the topmost branch
songbird sweetly serenades -
a new day unfolds

Author Notes Photo taken this morning by me.
It was too high up for me to identify the species, but the bird was singing at the top of its voice.

Chapter 26
Daisies

By Debra White

daisies crown
mbountiful birthday bouquet -
polka dot meadow

Author Notes haiku written in 3-8-5 syllable count

Chapter 27
Bubbling

By Debra White

bottled resentments
fizz furiously -
open at own risk

Chapter 28
Aglow

By Debra White

This morning, I've
been for a jog.
I made myself,
was such a slog -

but smashed 5K,
and so embrace
my sweaty, red
tomato face!

Author Notes I'm trying to get back into the habit of running at least twice a week.
Whilst it took me a while to persuade myself to leave the house this morning, I managed to run 5km non-stop in just over 30 minutes! I was rather red in the face when I got home, but very proud of my effort :) Maybe next time I can do the distance in under 30 minutes!

Chapter 29
Rebellion

By Debra White

defying the grey, vibrant tulips stand proud

Chapter 30
Closing The Book

By Debra White

Eight days overdue
but I got there in the end.
April came and went,
days of May I had to lend.

Chapters now complete,
though it’s been a bumpy ride -
NaPoWriMo’s done!
I can close this book with pride.

Author Notes Thank you for sticking by me whilst I got to the finish line!
