A Step Forward
by Claire Tennant
I was waiting for the train at work days end
When whom should I spy but a former friend
Standing in the carriage, smiling at me
I suddenly realised I was free
years of believing there would be a kiss
he might change my title from boring "Miss"
but you see, it was never meant to be
I loved enough to set him free
I had cried in Mumma's arms
She saw beyond the gorgeous voice and charm
as for Dad, he thought him ugly
and wanted better for me
remembering the pain of years past
I had gained freedom at last
I turned on my heel toward my left
I was no longer bereft
Into the other carriage, I stood
Leaving my darling for good
I still remember that day
A rendezvous in its way
God bless you, Sam, I still recall
The gorgeous voice, after all
