Candlelight in a Child's Eyes
by dovemarie
I was with my two-year-old son in a church for what turned out to be the last time I saw him (1988). It was the same church where I found out by calling on a payphone in the church to the office where I had my pregnancy test, and they told me the result was positive. When he was a toddler, I was sitting with him in one of the pews, and he started getting restless and making little sounds that made me feel he was getting ancy. So I took his hand and led him over to a case where candles were lit. He got quiet then, and held my hand while looking into the candles. The reddish hue was reflected in his teal blue eyes. He looked very serious. It was one of the happiest moments of my time with him when I still had temporary custody visits with the Department of Social Services (now Department of Children and Families). I will always remember that day. God was looking down on us.

I still pray that I will get to hear from my son again, I haven't heard from him since 2019, when he stopped receiving my letters and cards through the DCF office.
