Angel Onboard

by Peter G. Danakas

"I will show them, " Devi thought, accelerating to 110 km/hr as she left the city limits and headed out to the hilly countryside. She had just

picked up her new vehicle at the dealership. It was a huge, powerful SUV, and everybody had told her it was just too much for her. Even at the

dealership, one of the sales managers had to give her a hand as she got up into the driver's seat. Her previous car had been a stylish psychedelic

orange Mini Cooper. Her boyfriend, David, had said she was too much of a princess to handle a vehicle like that. After that, she just had to

have that SUV!  " I can buy any car I want! I work hard so I can afford it, and I'm going right to the dealership as soon as I hang up. I won't

be home tonight because I'll be hiking in Great Pine Forest with Anju. " "It's not as easy as the car commercials make it seem, you know," he

said.  "I'm really getting tired of your sarcasm lately..." "What are you talking about?"  "I have to go now. I don't want to keep Anju waiting."

" OK, call me if you need help..."  "Don't worry, the car comes with Angel Onboard..." Devi ended the call.  At first David had been so kind and

open to almost everything Devi was into. He worked in the security tech division of her home office, and they had just seemed to hit it off

immediately. He was eager to try various Indian dishes her mother had prepared and to accompany Devi to events at the temple downtown.

He tried hard and was very attentive in learning dance steps for the Indian cultural celebrations. Devi's parents were not too happy about her

choice of David at first, but were very impressed with his devotion and caring over the past several months, and the respect and courtesy with

which he always addressed them during their frequent video calls. In fact, they were arriving in a few weeks to meet David...Then, Devi had

expressed interest in buying a big SUV and something seemed to change...Devi was caught up in her thoughts about David and wasn't paying

attention to the bend of the road ahead. She made an attempt to brake and steer to the left, but the vehicle wouldn't respond and went off the

highway into the water filled ditch. She was stuck! And it was getting dark...Devi began to panic and started to have difficulty breathing, but

managed to calm down and focus on the situation. She remembered the Angel Onboard button above the dashboard, and felt grateful that

David had made sure to activate it for her earlier. Her right arm hurt as she reached out to punch the button...This is your onboard angel Raj.

How may I be of assistance Miss Devi?"  Devi was put off by the voice--he sounded like a white person doing a comical Indian accent.

"I crashed into a ditch, and I need help right away!"  "Right away? You may have to wait...princess..."  "Did you say--Princess? Who is this?"

During the last few weeks as David had grown more distant and cynical, he would quite often mimic the Indian accent and head movements in

an attempt to get under her skin. " David? Is that you?"  "I am here to serve you, your highness. Look in the rear view mirror." David was

wearing a kid's Halloween mask and holding up a huge butcher's cleaver.  Devi screamed...
