Christmas Down Under

An Australian Christmas

by Paul McFarland

Each Christmas, all around the Earth,
We celebrate the Holy Birth
Of Jesus Christ - our good Lord's Son -
Who gave His life so everyone

Would have a chance to enter in
The House of God devoid of sin.
A deadly price He had to pay
When He was crucified that day.

And I will never cease to wonder
What Christmas time is like Down Under.
I'm sure that it is hot down there
While up here, we breathe frigid air.

Now where I live it is a breeze
To find those nice green Christmas trees.
I'll bet down there you'd search in vain
And not find trees like here in Maine.

Now, Santa's clever as can be,
But there are things he can't foresee.
A problem that might come his way:
What would he use to pull his sleigh?

For I don't think he'll find reindeer
Down in that southern hemisphere.
I think what Santa Clause might choose
Would be a team of kangaroos.

Those runners that worked well in snow -
I think that they might have to go.
He might just go with Goodyear tires,
With summer tread if he desires.

Now I don't know how it appears,
But I'll bet he's got engineers
Among his elves that can decide
What would work best for that long ride.

And it is here that I should mention
That they have beefed up his suspension
To handle all the extra toys
For all those Aussie girls and boys.

In winter in that southern clime,
What do they do at Christmas time?
Now where I live, there's ice and snow.
But what do they have Down Below?

While winter lingers, and I freeze,
Australians put on shorts and Tee's.
And here subzero temps do reach,
While Aussies sunbathe at the beach.

Up here, I'll bet old Santa Claus
Is wearing woolen under draws,
While Down Below, he'll be decked out
In summer garb - there is no doubt.

No matter how old Santa's dressed,
On Christmas Eve, he'll do his best.
And Christmas morn, I'm sure Down Under,
Those kids will all be filled with wonder.
