Healing Grief

by jlsavell

I awoke to a melancholy feel
These rayless days I can't seem to go on
Losing you made my completed life reel
A cold stark reality since you've been gone

God, just grant me a moment's grace
to make this thing between us right
I need to see his loving face,
before another anguished night

I decided a rose I'd give to you
So I stopped by our best florist to buy
After all, that's what you would always do
Yes, as I tell myself it's worth a try

Stepping out in the sunshine, hope anew
Hailed a taxi to where you now reside
In hand a fragrant rose to give to you
Closing my eyes, I sense you by my side

God, I can't go through one more night
Please just grant me one moment's grace
to make this thing between us right
I need to feel his love's embrace

Parked by the lawn, I stepped out of the car
Sunglasses covered my tearing red eyes
I imagined you there, standing just afar
With your arms outstretched to comfort my cries

Just for a moment I heard your voice,
and your robust laughter that filled my soul
I knew coming here was the right choice,
for losing you had taken my heart's toll

I never once imagined you'd go away
Our time together was a cherished gift
That dark fateful night I begged you to stay
In a flash our world ripped and went adrift

Startled by a touch of comforting hands,
I turned to face the man that brought me here
Feeling helpless and weak I could not stand,
he held me close and wiped my anguished tears

God, please grant me a moment's grace
before I face another lonely night
I needed to come to this sad place
and let him know I'll be alright

It's been a year since you left me alone
I knelt to face the etched words before me
Your gallant name and facts in cold gray stone
I wiped my grieving tears
,

and placed my rose in loving memory
