See The World Through My Son's Eyes

by gramalot8

Come on, Mommy. You have to come right now! Jeffrey begged as he came crashing through the front door. You have to see it. Come right now!  Groaning silently, I relunctantly  turned away from my computer screen.  Jeffrey, can't you see that I'm busy right now?  Maybe in a little bit, ok?  I could feel his disappointment as he bowed his little head and slowly slumped away.  Alright, but you're going to miss it, I just know it!

I turned back to my work. It was hard to concentrate at the words displayed on the screen.  I so hated to put him off, but I had my daily quota to fulfill for my work-at-home free-lance job.  I hated it when I got behind and had to work harder to catch up and meet the demands of a deadline.  How can I be creative with my mind, time and talents being constantly interrupted.  Besides, what could I possibly be missing outside that had to be looked at right now.  I've got to get back to my work.  Now concentrate!

As I typed away, I could hear Jeffrey through the open window humming  his usual self-made tune.  I glanced through the dusty pane and could see him rhythmicly  turning around and round in a small circle, his shoulders  slumped  as only an unhappy child could do.  He looked so  vulnerable and lost out there all by himself.   I knew there would be no more writing for a deadline or anything else at this point.  I had to make one little boy a littler happier with life, and most of all with me.

Quickly clicking the off button on the computer, I actually  heaved a sigh of relief. I'd been suffering a deluge of writers block lately.  Maybe a break is just what I needed to get the creative juices flowing again.

Jeffrey, I called through the window, I'm free for a minute.  I'll be right out.  I was amazed at how quickly his slumped body reacted to my words.  Alright, Mommy!   Come on, hurry, it's almost too late!  He sprinted so fast up the steps that we collided as he met me at the front door.  He grabbed my hand and led me swiftly down the creaking, weather-worn stairs.  Whoa, Jeffrey.  Slow down before you have me falling on my face! I laughingly cried out as he rushed me towards the tree-lined fence in our unkempt weedy-filled backyard.  I've got to do something about these overgrown wildflowers and trees.  They're such a mess!  I silently scolded myself.

Come on, Mommy.  It's right over here.  But, be still, we don't want to make too much noise!  Finally hearing his words, I now was seriously wondering:  What has he been looking at?  Is it alive?  Is this something that could bite me, or for that matter, him?  Jeffrey, be careful!  What is it?  I loudly whispered, making sure I wasn't the one making too much noise and bothering  whatever it was we were about to intrude upon.

We descended into the damp, mossy area beneath the old, crusty  tree. The aroma of the wildflowers filled my senses. I stiffled a sneeze so as not to be too disturbing.  I could see and feel the small gnats and other creatures flying around our heads.  Without thinking, I waved them away. Jeffrey laughed and tried to capture them with his small boy hands.   Here, right here, Mommy.  Lay down.  I landed with a thud as he quickly pulled me down onto the soft mossy grass.  Jeffrey, what is it?  Where is it? I started to get up, not wanting to be off my feet when it came pouncing out from amidst the purple-gold  flowers and weeds, but Jeffrey pulled me back.  Glancing round, I laid back down as he loudly whispered,  No, Mommy, wait, you'll see.  Look at the flowers, and look through the leaves!  See, look, it's right there! And see the bugs  flyin' and crawlin' around? Sometimes they tickle my nose. I found it all by myself just this morning!

Slowly I lifted my head and tried to see through the leafy window of the tall oak tree.  What, Jeffrey, what am I supposed to see?  Jeffrey slowly brought his head closer to mine, his words quietly  tumbling out.  Sort of close your eyes... really hard. See the colors in the leaves?  See how they all melt together?  See the shiny spots and sparkly circles?  Look, see all the colors mixed together on the flowers?  Do you see it? Shh. Listen.  Do you hear it? He giggled as I gave him a puzzled look. You can hear the bugs movin'  everywhere.  Isn't it neat?  It's just like my teacher tole' us in Sunday School yesterday.  If you try really hard, you can see and hear God's work everywhere. Today, I found it up in the sky, in the trees and down here on the flowers!  I just laid here and looked 'round and 'round and ....there it was!  Do you see it, Mommy?

Relunctantly, as only an adult can do, I looked towards God's heavenly sky .   I took in a deep long breath, relishing now the sweet pungent smell and God colored buds that surrounded us both on the ground.  Suddenly I  knew!!  I had been  bitten by it.  And it was so beautiful. A vision that's only found through a small child's eyes.  Thanks, Jeffrey.  I do see it!  And with that, I knew  this had been just the break I needed.  Maybe now my own visions would be more open and I could be creative once again!

I had a very fun time with my own son when he was small and discovering the world around him. And when I saw this artwork by pepsif, I knew I just had to write this story. Hope you can see what I finally saw.
