The sinking of a Hospital Ship in 1943.

Creaming waves, Centaur homeward bound
Enemy below waited, made no sound Nurses tended badly wounded men They would never fight again Anguished cries as torpedo sunk her low UBoat captain ordered - dead slow Red Cross Hospital ship all aglow. |

The Hospital Ship Centaur was sunk by the Japanese UBoat at 4.10am off the coast of Queensland - in our waters. She had been watched by the Japanese who knew she had a Red Cross on her side to show the enemy that she was not a warship. Centaur was carrying our wounded men and the nurses that were caring for them. The UBoat captain ignored the Red Cross and sunk the Centaur with a loss of 332 lives - 64 survived the sinking. Later, the Japanese captain was sentenced to four years jail - absolutely ridiculous sentence for the atrocity that he caused.
