I'm Ned. I work in the boiler room of the Islander, the last steam driven ferry in operation in the US of A.
We go between Martha's Vineyard and Woods Hole, four times a day, carrying tourists and other commercial freight.
Today they moved me up to reception. I have to wear whites and be nice to paying customers. I prefer the boiler room to both.
A mean old lady, carrying a toy poodle, comes up to me and says, "You! Hold Fifi while I go through my bag to find my ticket."
Fifi swims and Ned is back!
