You Were the Cherry Blossoms, Dear

by RodG

Cherry Blossom Time Contest Winner
Do you recall when we first kissed?
T'was while we walked amidst these trees
in early spring when they just bloomed
and all their blossoms sang of bees.

You were the cherry blossoms, dear,
and I the dogwood standing near.

Then some time later on this spot
I clasped your hand on bended knees.
"Oh, will you marry me, my love,
and share my life forever, please?"

And when we wed upon this site,
you sauntered toward me down the aisle
with cherry blossoms in your hair
and on your lips a saucy smile.

You were the cherry blossoms, dear,
and I the dogwood standing near.

Each anniversary we came
to say aloud our vows again
despite the loss of our two sons
who died deep in Afghanistan.

Oh, Love, you're gone and buried here
where we once walked amidst these trees
in early spring when they just bloomed
and all their blossoms sang of bees.

You were the cherry blossoms, dear,
and I the dogwood standing near.
