A day in the life of a young sardine

A chapter in the book A Potpourri of Poetic Curiosities

Sardine School

by CD Richards

Hiding here in this hell-kettle, I
wait while the whale wanders off, then
silently swim to the shoal.
Glad that I'm not gobbled,
my Mom makes merry.
Dad draws breath and
calmly claims:
That was
close!

Today's word: hell-kettle (n.) a deep gulf, or abyss.

My much-treasured Christmas present for 2017 is a book by Paul Anthony Jones: "The cabinet of linguistic curiosities". Each page contains a descriptive story about some obscure or archaic word. It occurred to me it would be a fun exercise to try and write, each day, a poem featuring the "word of the day" from the book.

Thanks for reading.
