What is beauty?

by CD Richards

Her wealth, with envy, many viewed;
of beauty, she was blessed in spades.
The simple folk, she oft eschewed,
but fortunes change, and beauty fades.

In solitude, she learned of things
of more import than beautyhood;
for sometimes isolation brings
a self that's better understood.

Now, though in worldly terms, she's poor,
compassion has become her art.
She welcomes strangers at her door,
and greets them with an open heart.

Today's word: beautyhood (n.) the state of being beautiful; the time of life when a person is most beautiful.

My much-treasured Christmas present for 2017 is a book by Paul Anthony Jones: "The cabinet of linguistic curiosities". Each page contains a descriptive story about some obscure or archaic word. It occurred to me it would be a fun exercise to try and write, each day, a poem featuring the "word of the day" from the book.

Thanks for reading.
