A chapter in the book A Potpourri of Poetic Curiosities

Hanging with friends

by CD Richards

The man she loved was sure and steadfast,
both feet on the ground.
But somewhere on life's road, he stumbled,
now for jail he's bound.
The court delivered up the sentence,
judgement swift and sound.
His wife will be a hempen-widow,
he'll be hanging 'round.

Today's word: hempen-widow (n.) a woman whose husband has been hanged.

My much-treasured Christmas present for 2017 is a book by Paul Anthony Jones: "The cabinet of linguistic curiosities". Each page contains a descriptive story about some obscure or archaic word. It occurred to me it would be a fun exercise to try and write, each day, a poem featuring the "word of the day" from the book.
