A chapter in the book A Four Letter Word Called Love

Grant Me Roses

by fm wright

You tell me that you do love me
and that's how it'll forever be.
So that I may know your words are true
I'll make only one request of you,
when I take that special walk down the aisle
there's one thing that will make me smile;
in a year forth following our wedding day,
that you'll in a made up bouquet:

Grant to me roses, one for every year.
Grant to me roses, she finishes with a tear.

You've told me that you do love me.
You've said that's how it shall always be.
To know that your words will always be true
I have a request to make of you.
With each passing year of our wedded bliss,
again all I ask for is just this;
that each anniversary forever more,
of you, this I do most implore:

Grant to me roses, one for every year.
Grant to me roses, she finishes with a tear.

To know for sure that you love me,
and that's how it'll evermore be;
so I'll be sure your words remain true,
I've one last request to make of you.
When that time comes which causes us to part,
I have but one desire in my heart.
As I lay there in that cold, dark dreamless sleep,
this vow I ask for you to keep:

Grant to me roses, one for every year.
Grant to me roses, she finishes with a tear.

Henceforth to show my love is real,
and this is the way I'll always feel,
and so that you'll know my word's still true;
till I'm lying there right next to you,
my pledge I'll give to you and never wave.
Each time I plant flowers on your grave;
for no matter just how long you shall be gone,
your words to me will echo on:

Grant to me roses, one for every year.
Grant to me roses, he finishes with a tear.
