He stumbled and swayed
His sodden brain decayed
Walking for miles
Nowhere with smiles
The church loomed large
The Lord was sailing his barge
Inside the glass windows shone
His plea, simple but strong
Sober I would for thee
Writing for Eternity
Chalk in hand his certainty
The drunk was promised sobriety
On every concrete path he wrote
"Eternity," handwritten promise he did dote
We looked at the script on dirty, dusty street
Then we believed, Arthur, wrote the Lord's beat

Author Notes
Arthur Stace - Sydney1885-1967; Arthur had been a petty thief and drunkard. After he made a promise to the Lord to write in chalk "Eternity" he became quite the celebrity. One New Year's Eve 1999, Eternity was lit up on our Harbour Bridge. So Arthur was remembered and god praised. Arthur wrote 35.000 times on the pavements of Sydney. It pulled me in when I saw it written in beautiful Copperplate writing. Thanks for reading a true story of what one man can do.
