A Fear of the Pitch by jmdg1954 Flash Fiction contest entry |
Just keep your eye on the ball. Like a broken record, those words play over and over in my head. I plant my feet, bend my knees, pull the bat into place. Staring at the pitcher, I swallow hard, ready to leap away from the batters box. It’s normal to be scared! It felt like the sweat on my hands formed pools inside the batting gloves. Others conquer their fear of the ball. Why not me? Hoping for reassurance, I dig my back foot into the dirt and tighten my grip on the bat. Be positive. I can do this. With this pitch I won’t be scared anymore! I can swing with confidence, like everyone else. I too can be a baseball player. I tensed my arms, ready to swing at this pitch. It’s coming toward my face! I duck away from the ball, stunned. I wondered why I didn’t swing?
