Thirty (hopefully) Poems for April
: Cowbird by Debra White

It’s true, I’d never heard of you before.
A name like yours prevented me accepting
that you were not dreamt up by fantasists.
You're not the creature I had been expecting.

A feathered, bovine beast would be absurd...
It’s fact that you're a bonafide bird!

Author Notes
I'm late starting NaPoWriMo this year, but I hope to catch up and write 30 poems in April.

My intention was to use the prompt for day two from napowrimo.net. BUT, within the prompt, I came across the word 'cowbird', something I hadn't heard of before. I decided to abandon the prompt and to write about a cowbird instead!

bovine - relating to or affecting cattle
bonafide - genuine; real

The artwork is straight from the imagination of my talented daughter, Katie, and the photograph is courtesy of bird.org.

Cowbirds are birds belonging to the genus Molothrus in the family Icteridae. They are of New World origin, and are obligate brood parasites, laying their eggs in the nests of other species. (Wikipedia)
